Ramona Newell Batchelor Growing up on horse and cattle ranches in Texas and Louisiana, Ramona learned to love the western way of life at a young age. As she began to study art in school, her chosen subject matters were those things that consumed most of her time. She particularly enjoyed drawing animals and people. At 15, Ramona was given the opportunity to attend the Baton Rouge Fine Art Academy. Under the instruction of Larry Cass, Ramona learned to add depth to pencil drawings and excellent watercolor techniques. She put much effort into bringing out details in drawings showing power in each muscle, the glint of light on a buckle, the grinding of teeth. "I want people to experience the western lifestyle, its effort, intensity, and passion." During high school, Ramona traveled to many horse shows rodeos and cuttings at local, state, and regional levels. These accomplishments helped her win a full rodeo scholarship. In Beeville, Ramona studied studio art under Shirley Kibler, Stuart Wolford, and Simon Micheal. Ramona continues to expand her skills while caring for her family. She has participated in art shows in Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado. Now an active member of the Florence Art Guild and the Killeen Civic Art field, her work may be found in galleries and shops in the central Texas area.
