Jim
Soft Pastel painting on black velour paper 20x24
inches. My husband posed for this painting as it is my favorite work to
date. I love the play of light and cast shadows across his face. His black
felt Stetson is a signature article of clothing for him. This piece started
as a figure-for malist work, however, it progressed into a biographical
portrait.

Dawn Hopefuls
Soft pastel painting on Canson Mi-tientes paper 19x25
inches. This painting of racing homing pigeons was inspired by some of
my young birds. Homers are releases from their race stations at dawn and
fly non-stop until they reach their homes where owner and food are waiting
for them. My favorites are the white and white splash colored birds. This
painting was reproduced as a limited edition lithograph soon after completion.

After studying many different media, Carol favors
soft pastel because "it suits my temperament and painting style. I prefer
to work quickly while I am inspired by a subject or idea and am impatient
to see the finished product. Pastel meshes painting and drawing-strokes
that give energy to the works. I depend on the composition and positioning
of the subject plus the use of dramatic lighting and cast shadows to bring
interest to my work.
